Description
Duncan Taylor drew this 1979 Inverleven from a single ex-Bourbon cask for its Rarest of the Rare range, the Huntly bottler's home for closed-distillery rarities. Cask 5665 gave only 130 bottles for Europe at 24 years old, bottled at a formidable strength.
Inverleven was a malt distillery within the Dumbarton grain complex, built by Hiram Walker in 1938 for the Ballantine's blend and silent since 1991. Its severe lyne arm angle gave the blenders a particular spirit character. Matured in ex-Bourbon oak, the cask held its strength unusually well across the decades.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 61.6%. The ex-Bourbon wood gives vanillin for vanilla and oak lactones for coconut. The recorded note is a coal-gas mineral edge, the industrial trace some old Lowland spirit shows, cutting through the waxy fruit. Intense, and gone for good.
