Description
Classed by Diageo among its nutty and spicy malts, Inchgower is the Manzanilla of Speyside, its coastal saltiness setting it apart from its floral neighbours. The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, selected this single cask, distilled in 2001, and released it at 19 years old in its The Cooper's Choice range. Single cask 9334 gave 258 bottles, released for Europe.
A quick mashing regime and a warmer second water give Inchgower the savoury, saline character that earns it the Manzanilla of Speyside nickname. This bottling matured in an ex-Bourbon cask with a finish in a Sauternes wine cask.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 49.5%, without dilution, the ex-Bourbon wood gives vanillin for vanilla and oak lactones for coconut, with maltol lending toffee, and the Sauternes wood layers honeyed apricot and candied citrus over the spirit. At 19 years the cask has had time to round off the spirit's coastal edge and pull the flavours together.
