Description
Cask #001 of Ardbeg's Rare Cask programme, the inaugural numbered release of the Distillery's upper tier single cask track. Rare Cask sits above the standard Distillery Single Cask programme, reserving unusual cask types and configurations selected by the distillery manager. The #001 designation marks this as the first sequentially numbered release, with subsequent Rare Cask bottlings channelled through the same programme over the following years.
Bottled on 21 August 2020 at nine years, 57.7% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour, 354 bottles drawn at natural strength. The cask type is recorded as oloroso sherry combined with virgin American oak, indicating a secondary finishing phase or hybrid stave construction. Virgin oak fills are rare in Scotch maturation, where ex Bourbon and ex Sherry casks dominate.
The dual cask chemistry combines oloroso oxidation (melanoidins, gallic and ellagic polyphenols, rancio sotolon) with virgin American oak extraction at maximum intensity (cis and trans oak lactones at saturation, lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde, hemicellulose furfural). Layered onto modern Ardbeg's 50 to 55 ppm peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol), the dual chemistry shifts the smoke register toward stewed dried fruit, dark chocolate, intense coconut and saturated vanilla beneath the phenolic smoke. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated citrus and stone fruit beneath the layered chemistry.
