Description
A legendary Italian independent bottling of 1973 Ardbeg from Sestante, the Milan based importer run by Ernesto Mainardi during the 1980s and early 1990s. Sestante ceased releasing whisky in the 1990s, and surviving bottles from their Islay programme have become among the most collected old bottlings on the secondary market. One of three 15 year old Ardbegs bottled by Sestante in 1988, with two at cask strength.
Filled into refill American oak cask in 1973 during Hiram Walker's full production years and matured on Islay for fifteen years before bottling in 1988 at 53.5% ABV, the depths of the silent decade. Released in the Italian market 75cl format with no chill filtration and no added colour, the standard Sestante release spec.
Fifteen years of refill American oak maturation places this release in the mid age expression for 1973 Hiram Walker distillate. Cis and trans oak lactones build coconut and oiled wood at developing concentration, while lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer sweet vanilla and baking spice. Hemicellulose furans add emerging caramel and toasted almond. The 1973 peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol) read at strong intensity at this age, with limited oxidative conversion compared to thirty year siblings. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature carries through as concentrated tropical fruit (pineapple, lemon, melon), the distillery's spirit still architecture against the Sestante era backdrop.
