Description
An exceptionally young SMWS Ardbeg release at just 7 years old and an extraordinary 64.6% retained ABV. SMWS single cask releases regularly include young, high strength expressions where the Society's emphasis on individual cask character allows for releases outside the standard 10 year minimum age statement format. The 64.6% reading is near spirit out of the still strength, indicating a first fill bourbon barrel in a cool dunnage position with very low ethanol attrition.
Filled into first fill bourbon barrel in 2005 during the stable modern Glenmorangie era at Ardbeg. Matured on Islay for seven years, bottled at 64.6% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The young age preserves the spirit at peak phenolic and ester expression before extensive wood interaction softens the profile.
Seven years of first fill American oak interaction at retained high ABV delivers concentrated spirit forward expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) emerge at moderate concentration, lignin vanillin contributes sweet vanilla, and hemicellulose furans sit in the background. The modern Glenmorangie spec peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at peak concentrated intensity, sharper than older siblings where slow oxidation softens the phenolic edge. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit at peak expression, the spirit still architecture clearly visible at this young age.
