Ardbeg 9 Years Old 1996 Cask #935

Cask #935 is the first of three consecutive Gordon & MacPhail 1996 Ardbeg casks (#935, #936, #937) released in 2005 under the Spirit of Scotland series. The consecutive cask numbers indicate consecutive fills in the warehouse run, sharing distillation date and wash regime before diverging across nine years of individual cask maturation. The 1996 vintage represents Ardbeg's final year of Allied Distillers ownership before the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition, with G&M having acquired the casks during the late Allied warehouse off loading period.

Filled into refill American oak cask #935 in 1996 during Allied's final production year. Matured on Islay for nine years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2005 at 52.9% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 52.9% reading is the lowest of the trio, reflecting a more humid warehouse position with faster ethanol attrition than sister casks #936 (54.7%) and #937 (53.1%).

Nine years of refill American oak interaction delivers spirit forward expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at moderate concentration, lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde contribute emerging vanilla and baking spice, and hemicellulose furans add background caramel. The 1996 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at peak concentrated intensity. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers tropical fruit at peak expression.
