Ardbeg 22 Years Old 1998 (Rare Cask)

Rare Cask is the upper tier of Ardbeg's Distillery exclusive single cask programme, reserving older and unusual archive casks for limited release. 1998 spirit belongs to the earliest cohort of Glenmorangie owned production, filled during the company's first full year of operating Ardbeg after the 1997 acquisition and the new equipment commissioning. The Rare Cask label sits alongside the standard Private Bottling and Single Cask releases and is typically reserved for casks selected by the distillery manager.

Matured on Islay for twenty two years from 1998 through the 2004 LVMH acquisition and into the modern era. Bottled in 2020 at 56.5% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour, full strength expression with no dilution. The retained 56.5% reading after more than two decades points to a tightly sealed cask with relatively low ethanol attrition through the humid maritime warehouse cycle.

Twenty two years of bourbon maturation delivers near full oak interaction. Lignin derived vanillin and syringaldehyde build sweet vanilla and baking spice, while hemicellulose breakdown adds furfural caramel and toasted almond. The Glenmorangie spec peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) hold strong intensity, delivering classic phenolic smoke layered with medicinal iodine from coastal warehouse exposure to bromophenol. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature carries through as concentrated tropical fruit (pineapple, lemon, mango) beneath the integrated phenolic core.
