Description
Released through Directors' Cut, part of Douglas Laing's single cask relaunch following the 2013 family business split. When Stewart Laing left to found Hunter Laing with sons Andrew and Scott, the Old & Rare Platinum and Old Malt Cask programmes moved with him. Douglas Laing (now run by Fred Laing Jr.) rebuilt its single cask portfolio with new labels: Old Particular as the flagship workhorse range, Xtra Old Particular (XOP) at the senior tier, and Directors' Cut for mid age expressions.
Filled into refill American oak in 1991 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening and matured for twenty three years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2014 at 53.1% ABV for the German market, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 2014 release date sits one year into Douglas Laing's post split rebuilt programme.
Twenty three years of refill American oak maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1991 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging toward leather and tarred rope. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
