Description
An Aberfeldy 10 year old bottled by Douglas Laing under the Premier Barrel series for the Dutch specialist trade, 320 bottles. The line has been one of the firm's identifying ranges since the 1990s, with the distinctive ceramic decanter packaging predating the 2013 family restructure that separated Douglas Laing & Co under Fred and Cara Laing from Hunter Laing under Stewart Laing. Premier Barrel has continued under the Douglas Laing & Co side of that split.
Long fermentation Aberfeldy wash from the four still configuration, distilled at the Highland distillery under John Dewar & Sons (Bacardi) ownership. Aged 10 years in ex Bourbon American oak at Douglas Laing's bonded warehouses. Bottled at the Premier Barrel house specification of 46% with reduced chill filtering and no caramel adjustment, in the signature ceramic decanter.
Ten years in ex Bourbon American oak at moderate strength builds a measured wood signature: vanillin from steady lignin breakdown, cis whisky lactones giving the soft coconut and dill character, and furanic compounds (furfural, 5 hydroxymethylfurfural) from hemicellulose contributing toasted cereal and light caramel. Aberfeldy's house ester profile (ethyl laurate, ethyl myristate, heavier alcohols) carries the heather honey and beeswax through. At 46% the wood and spirit run roughly in balance, neither competing for the front.
