Description
Distilled at Aberfeldy in 2009 and matured 10 years in a single ex Bourbon cask, bottled by Hidden Spirits in 2019 at cask strength 51.9% for the European specialist trade. Cask code AB 919, with 'AB' identifying Aberfeldy in the bottler's internal numbering. 171 bottles drawn from the cask. Hidden Spirits is an Italian indie founded in 2017 by Marco Bonsanto, focused on single cask Scottish malt releases for the European trade with declared cask strength and no chill filtering as house standards.
Long fermentation Aberfeldy wash from the four still configuration, distilled in 2009 under John Dewar & Sons (Bacardi) ownership. Filled into a single ex Bourbon cask and aged 10 years before bottling at 51.9% with no chill filtering and no caramel adjustment, the Hidden Spirits house specification.
Ten years in ex Bourbon American oak at cask strength produces a focused but young oak profile: vanillin from lignin breakdown sits at moderate levels, cis whisky lactones contribute soft coconut and dill, and hemicellulose breakdown gives furfural and 5 hydroxymethylfurfural for the caramel and toasted cereal layer. Aberfeldy's house ester profile (ethyl laurate, ethyl myristate, heavier alcohols) drives the heather honey and beeswax base, with 51.9% holding ester volatility on the nose and the oily texture intact. The 171 bottle yield is consistent with a smaller hogshead format.
