Description
The Ambassadors Choice range at Arran ran through the late 2000s as a distillery selected single cask programme, with individual casks chosen by the company's brand ambassadors as standout releases for specialist whisky retail distribution. The series provided a formal recognition mechanism for casks showing particularly distinctive character, sitting alongside the wider single cask programmes of the period. Cask 444 from the 1998 vintage was bottled at ten years old in 2008 for the German market through this programme.
Spirit was distilled at Lochranza in 1998 and matured ten years in a single Oloroso seasoned cask. Bottled in 2008 at 46% without chill filtration and without added colour, with the 611 bottle outturn indicating an Oloroso butt format rather than a smaller hogshead. The 46% strength sits at the threshold above which chill filtration becomes unnecessary while delivering a more accessible alcoholic strength than full cask strength.
Ten years of Oloroso butt maturation produces measured sherry compound integration, with the larger butt format slowing the surface area driven extraction rate compared to hogsheads. The cask supplied sotolon, furfural and polyphenol fraction develops alongside the underlying Arran spirit signature from the 1998 distillation year, with the recorded flavour profile of chocolate, new wood and sherried capturing the integrated cask and spirit balance at the ten year point.
