Description
The recurring nature of Cognac Cask releases at Arran reflected the distillery's working relationships with French oak cask suppliers during the early 2000s. Cognac casks coming back into the market were a valued source of high quality French oak with substantial spirit residue, and Arran used these casks as part of its broader cask finishing strategy. The bottlings appeared across the Whiskybase catalogue as separate batches rather than a numbered series.
Primary maturation runs in first fill ex Bourbon American oak barrels at Lochranza, with the Cognac finishing phase running in casks of French oak previously used for Cognac maturation. Bottling at 59.9% without chill filtration and without added colouring, with the higher ABV reflecting the cask strength of the vatted batch.
The combined American and French oak phases produce a particular layered profile. The Bourbon underlay supplies vanillin, cis whisky lactones and the coconut sugar layer from American oak. The Cognac finish overlays a finer trans lactone driven spice, the ellagitannin tannic structure of French oak, and the rancio derived aroma compounds from long aged grape spirit maturation. The result is a fuller, drier and more structured whisky than pure Bourbon matured spirit of equivalent age would produce.
