Description
Cask Series 020 from North Star Spirits gathers releases across multiple distilleries under one numbered identifier, with this Glenrothes 36 Years Old 1986 the deepest aged member of the release. North Star has bottled Scotch from Glasgow since 2016, presenting bottlings at natural strength with transparent cask provenance. This release was bottled in 2022 at a naturally reduced 44.1% from refill bourbon casks, with 303 bottles destined for European markets.
Thirty six years of refill bourbon ageing produces a profile fundamentally driven by distillery character. The cask's first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes minimally through slow secondary chemistry alone. The natural reduction to 44.1% reflects nearly four decades of angel's share evaporation in higher humidity warehousing. Lignin's tertiary breakdown continues to deliver small amounts of vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside lactone contributions, allowing the spirit's natural Speyside ester chemistry to lead.
On the nose, hay barn warmth and dried grass sit alongside fresh apple, with a cooked vegetable depth and leafy menthol coolness signalling the spirit's accumulated maturation character. The palate runs honeyed and gentle, cooked pear and lemon curd at the front, with 44.1% strength delivering preserved acidity. The finish is long, soft and lingering, the cask's exhausted tannin signature giving the spirit clear room to express.
