Description
Cask 3068A is a sub division of the parent Whiskydudes 2012 Glenrothes filling, sitting alongside cask 3068 which was matured in Tawny Port. The A designation indicates that a single butt was split into smaller casks during the maturation, allowing different finishing or maturation transfers. This Oloroso version was bottled in 2023 at 62.4% with 143 bottles destined for the European market, the small outturn consistent with a sub divided butt format.
Eleven years in an Oloroso cask at 62.4% sustained strength produces a concentrated sherry profile alongside aggressive European oak interaction. The cask's first fill activity remains well developed at this age, contributing oxidised glucose and aldehyde chemistry from the residual Oloroso sherry alongside lignin's vanillin and syringaldehyde breakdown. Hemicellulose furfural chemistry is in active development, and ellagitannins structure the spirit at the high strength without softening.
The nose lifts raisin and fig with polished oak underneath, the cask's first fill sherry signature clearly forward. The palate moves through dark chocolate, dried prune and a developing leathery quality, with 62.4% strength delivering the cask's full extractive load. European oak tannins emerge mid palate, framing the residual sweetness with structural grip. The finish is long and tannic, the cask still in active extraction with the spirit's Speyside character holding underneath.
