Description
Sea Shepherd is the marine conservation organisation founded in 1977, operating its own fleet to defend ocean wildlife and marine ecosystems across the Atlantic, African coastline, Mediterranean and Baltic. The organisation funds its high-seas operations partly through donations, including proceeds from periodic charity bottlings released by independent whisky bottlers. Signatory Vintage has supported Sea Shepherd through multiple bottlings over recent years, choosing single malts whose maritime character reflects the organisation's ocean focus.
This Bunnahabhain comes from cask 900791, an 11 year old matured fully in a single first-fill sherry butt. The first-fill cask produces an active wood signature: deep Oloroso character with concentrated nutty walnut, dried fig, leather and polished oak, layered against the Bunnahabhain coastal house style. At eleven years on first-fill wood, the cask is in vigorous interaction with the spirit; some bottlers would have moved this into refill at a younger age to avoid wood domination, but the Bunnahabhain distillate's natural oiliness and weight carries the active sherry transfer cleanly.
The 46% bottling sits at a deliberately reduced presentation strength rather than full cask strength, allowing the sherry character to integrate softly across the longer drinking window the lower ABV provides. Sea Shepherd themed bottlings are released at this consistent strength point across the series. 850 bottles, with a portion of proceeds going directly to the marine conservation work. Natural colour, non-chill-filtered, single cask.
