Description
Cadenhead's was founded in Aberdeen in 1842, making it Scotland's oldest independent bottler still in operation. The firm has been owned by J&A Mitchell, the company behind Springbank Distillery, since 1972 and now runs from Campbeltown. The Original Collection is the bottler's core single-cask line, presenting individual casks at a consistent 46% bottling strength rather than the natural cask strength used in Cadenhead's premium ranges. This 10 year old Bunnahabhain comes from spirit distilled in 2013 and bottled in 2024.
Spirit distilled in 2013 falls into the Burn Stewart ownership era of Bunnahabhain, the period after the 2003 sale from Edrington when production was being deliberately ramped back up after the previous era's reduced output. Stock from this period reflects the distillery returning to fuller-throughput operation, with casks filled in the early 2010s now reaching their first decade of independent single-malt releases.
Refill cask maturation at ten years produces a quieter wood signature than active first-fill casks. The American oak supplies vanilla and soft toasted character without the heavier impact that newer wood would deliver, leaving the spirit room to lead. Expect the Bunnahabhain coastal house style coming through clearly: oily texture, lightly maritime brine, the underlying mineral signature from the Margadale Burn spring source. The 46% bottling sits at Cadenhead's house presentation strength. Natural colour, non-chill-filtered, single cask.
