Description
Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice line dates back to 1968, making it among the very earliest dedicated single-malt independent ranges in the Scotch industry. The Cask Strength tier within the line carries individual casks at natural strength rather than the diluted core-range presentation. Cask 339 holds 2009-vintage Bunnahabhain that spent fifteen years in a single Oloroso butt before bottling in 2024 at 56.8% natural strength.
Spirit from 2009 sits in the Burn Stewart ownership era of Bunnahabhain, after the 2003 sale from Edrington and before the eventual transition through Distell to Loch Lomond Group. The Burn Stewart years marked a deliberate ramp-up in single-malt production after the previous Edrington period had limited Bunnahabhain to just a few weeks of annual distillation. G&M's filling activity tracked that ramp-up, and casks from 2009 represent the period where stock-building for independent bottling was at full pace.
At fifteen years in Oloroso, the cask sits in the middle of its sherry-maturation arc. The wood has had time to deliver classic markers of nutty walnut, dried fig, leather and toasted oak, but hasn't yet entered the heavier concentrated register that very long sherry maturations produce. The spirit-and-cask balance is open: the Bunnahabhain coastal house style still pushes through, with oily texture, light maritime brine and the underlying mineral signature from the Margadale Burn spring water carrying alongside the Oloroso structure. Single cask, natural colour, non-chill-filtered.
