Description
Turas Math is Scots Gaelic for 'a good journey', and the Westering Home Collection is Bunnahabhain's series of limited-edition releases under that name, launched in 2025 with Turas Math No. 1 as the inaugural bottling. The collection theme draws on the distillery's geography on Islay's northeastern coast, looking westward across the Sound to Jura. Each release in the series carries a distinct cask programme; this first one is fully matured in Manzanilla sherry casks, distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2025 at 55.9% natural strength.
Manzanilla is the rarest of the production sherry styles used to season Scotch casks. The wine is fortified to a low level (around 15% ABV) and ages in seaside soleras at Sanlúcar de Barrameda under a thick layer of flor yeast, which protects the wine from oxidation and develops a distinct salinity from the coastal location. Manzanilla casks transfer that salt-tinged dryness into the spirit, alongside almond, green apple and a chalky mineral acidity that complements rather than fights the Bunnahabhain coastal house style.
On a 15 year old Bunnahabhain spirit that has spent its full life in Manzanilla rather than a finishing pass, the wood influence runs deep. Expect the dry-saline edge throughout, almond and citrus pith on the palate, and a bone-dry finish that the Manzanilla signature carries. The distillate's natural maritime brine reads twice over against the wine's own salt-laced character, producing a more linear, cohesive bottle than the sweeter Oloroso or PX house style. Natural colour, non-chill-filtered.
