Description
Takamaka Dark Spiced is produced at Trois Frères Distillery on Mahé in the Seychelles, home of the Takamaka range. The distillery was established in 2002 and works with a multi still setup, using both pot and column distillation to build a base rum that can carry added botanicals without turning heavy or syrupy. In this bottling the rum is flavoured with natural essences including vanilla and papaya, giving a warm spiced style that sits closer to a cocktail focussed spiced spirit than a high ester sipping rum.
From a technical flavour standpoint, the profile is driven by a mix of rum congeners and added spice volatiles. Vanilla character comes primarily from vanillin style compounds, while the broader baking spice and sweetness impression comes from aromatic spice extracts layered over caramelised sugar notes and gentle oak like dryness. At 38% ABV it stays smooth and low grip, so it works cleanly in long serves where spice and fruit need to show without heat dominating.
On the nose you can expect vanilla, cinnamon and ginger with soft papaya and crème brûlée notes. The palate follows with sweet spice, dried tropical fruit, caramel and a light woody bitterness that stops it feeling cloying. The finish is medium length, fading through vanilla and peppery spice with a darker charred edge underneath.
